Founding and Host Partner
Visit Rwanda is proud to be the official Founding and Host Partner of the Basketball Africa League.
Through the partnership, Rwanda hosted the first-ever Basketball Africa League tournament at the Kigali Arena from 16-30 May 2021. This unique collaboration will showcase Rwanda as a world-class tourism and investment destination and position the country as a continental hub for sporting events and sports-based tourism.
Visit Rwanda and the Basketball Africa League will also collaborate on basketball and youth development initiatives.

The Tournament
The Basketball Africa League inaugural season tipped off Sunday, 16 May 2022 at the Kigali Arena, with 12 teams from across Africa competing including Angola, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia as well as Algeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique and Rwanda.
Basketball fans around the world watched the BAL on broadcast partners.

Kigali Arena
The Location
The Kigali Arena is the largest indoor stadium in East Africa, with a capacity to seat 10,000 people. The multi-purpose arena will host all 26 matches of the inaugural Basketball Africa League.
The Arena comprises of 13 cafeterias and restaurants, six changing rooms, two rooms for the coaching staff, a fitness centre, a media hall, and a doping control room.
The sports venue is located in Kigali’s sporting precinct nearby to the 30,000 capacity Amahoro Stadium and the 2,500 capacity Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
Basketball in Rwanda
Basketball is among the most popular sports in Rwanda, second only to football and by far the most watched indoor sport in the country.
The Rwanda Basketball Federation oversees basketball across the country and provides an enabling environment for skill development, talent nurturing and high-level competition for basketball in Rwanda. Learn more here.
