Rwanda Development Board launches digital application for Liberation History Tourism Trail

As the country celebrates its national liberation for the 26th time, the Rwanda Development Board has launched a Liberation History Tourism Trail digital app.

The Liberation History Tourism Trail was initiated in 2018 in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and Rwanda Defence Force.

The trail as a tourism product, capitalizes on the growing demand for heritage and cultural offerings as well as global interest in Rwanda, its liberation story and post-genocide transformation.

The Liberation History Tourism Trail as a new heritage tourism product traces the route of the Rwanda Patriotic Army’s liberation struggle from October 1990 to July 4th 1994.

During the initiation of the project 8 unique destinations were identified based on attractiveness and readiness along the liberation tourism trial for development into touristic attractions.
These are; Kagitumba, Shonga, Mulindi, Mukarange, Musanze (Nyamagumba), Urugano, CND and Gikoba.

The digital application that was launched during the 4th of July celebrations in Nyagatare, will provide the end user with readily available content about the trail and will be accessible worldwide. The features of the App will include information on the history and significance of all 44 liberation sites located in six districts across the country. Additional features such as accessibility, surrounding amenities and booking information.

Commenting on the new mobile application and trail, the RDB Chief Tourism Officer, Belise Kariza said:

“The preservation of liberation heritage sites is a national priority not only for the growth of both domestic and international tourism but also as Income generating activities for the communities that supported the troops during the Liberation struggle. This App aims to connect Rwanda’s heritage and cultural attractions with existing diverse tourism products and experiences.
